For anyone who can’t get enough of Until Dawn’s popcorn horror flick presentation, The Dark Pictures Anthology is a worthy successor from the same developer, Supermassive Games.

Still not complete, the series is set to feature eight standalone games, each focusing on a different supernatural theme, characters, and setting.

The latest installment is House of Ashes, in which players control a squad of Special Forces soldiers on a mission to find weapons of mass destruction when they stumble upon something far more sinister.

The game builds off of the Until Dawn formula by including a movie night mode where up to five people can take turns passing around the controller playing as different characters.

If you walked away from Until Dawn hungry for more backstory about the Blackwood Sanatorium, then The Inpatient is the perfect game to play next, assuming you have a PlayStation VR headset.

In it, you take on the role of a patient suffering from amnesia that ends up in the historically controversial institution during the 1950s.

While the game positions itself as a prequel, players can make choices that affect the outcome of the story and trigger unique responses from characters they encounter.

Like Until Dawn, The Inpatient is ripe with jump scares and clever twists that rely on voice recognition via the PSVR headset.

Next up, Hidden Agenda is an interactive crime thriller that utilizes the PlayStation 4’s PlayLink feature in which players can use their smartphone as a controller.

In it, up to six players must try and work together to crack a case while also carrying out secret personal objectives without getting caught.

Much like the cast in Until Dawn, this leads to shaky alliances and accusations whenever someone in the party does something suspicious, like voting against the majority during a pivotal moment in the story.

If you had previously played Until Dawn with some pals, we suggest reuniting and giving Hidden Agenda a try.

Decision-making is a major component of Until Dawn’s compelling gameplay, often forcing you to make an important choice or react to a time-sensitive event.

Another PlayStation exclusive that leans into this quick reflex approach is The Last of Us Part II, which doubles down on the anxiety-inducing button prompts, puzzles, and combat of the original.

In terms of story, the sequel sees protagonists Joel and Ellie settling down in Jackson, Wyoming where they’re discovered by a band of vengeful survivors belonging to the Washington Liberation Front.

Similar to Until Dawn, characters are given substantial depth and often engage in raw and emotional dialogue that greatly benefits from insanely detailed motion-capture performances.

Presented in 2D Oxenfree is another interactive drama that swaps out Until Dawn’s remote snowy mountain setting with an equally secluded island housing a supernatural secret.

The game centers on a vacationing blue-haired teenager named Alex along with her friends and stepbrother as they set out to test a local myth.

Legend has it that tuning a radio to specific frequencies allows you to make contact with otherworldly spirits.

Naturally, things take a dark turn for Alex and her friends as the group find themselves exploring the island’s mysterious history while navigating their relationships.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a survival horror game that, similar to Until Dawn, uses decision-making to play with our preconceived notions regarding right and wrong.

In it, you take control of 35-year-old Rosemary Reed as she investigates the disappearance of a local girl named Celeste.

Rosemary’s search ends up leading her to the home of Dr. Richard Felton, Celeste’s father and a retired notary with a mysterious illness and guarded secrets.

Relying solely on evidence and their instincts, players must piece together the events leading up to Celeste’s disappearance while evading enemies who seek to silence her.

Any self-respecting survival horror aficionado will be familiar with the name of genre pioneer Shinji Mikami, best known for creating Resident Evil in the 1990s.

Since then, Mikami has established another successful survival horror franchise with The Evil Within, which centers on a detective looking for his missing daughter.

In order to find her, he’s forced to travel inside his own mind and explore a strange alternate world called STEM where dark and terrifying creatures roam freely.

Like Until Dawn, The Evil Within 1 and 2 put players in constant danger from start to finish, with Detective Sebastian often having to scavenge for ammo and other limited resources to stay alive.

State of Decay 2 is another sequel that expands on the original formula while hitting the same survival horror notes as Until Dawn.

In it, players assume control of a group of survivors amidst a zombie virus outbreak with the ability to switch between characters at any moment to complete various tasks.

Like Until Dawn, each character is fully voiced, assigned a unique backstory and personality, and at the mercy of permadeath progression.

Despite not having the most compelling or even layered narrative, State of Decay 2 manages to hold the player’s attention by adding chaos to every moment of gameplay.

If you love interactive dramas like Until Dawn, then there’s a good chance you’ve either already played or would thoroughly enjoy dipping your toes into Quantic Dreams’ catalog.

One of the studio’s standout titles is Beyond: Two Souls, which tells a captivating story revolving around supernatural mysteries such as alternate realities and the afterlife.

The story centers on Jodie Holmes (played by Elliot Page), as she’s guided by a mysterious force within to explore her past and use her powers to shape the future.

Much like Until Dawn, enjoyment largely depends on how compelling you find the story and characters as well as your tolerance for quick-time events and dialogue-driven gameplay.

Another Quantic Dreams game worth checking out is Detroit: Become Human, which takes place during the year 2038 where technology has advanced to produce highly intelligent assistant androids.

The story heavily focuses on the relationship between humans and androids as well as whether the latter should be granted the same freedoms as their fleshy counterparts.

Players control three androids with entirely unique roles and personalities who start to acquire sentience and make choices that don’t quite align with their intended programming.

Like Until Dawn, the game has multiple endings depending on your choices throughout the story, with each one attempting to grapple with the notion of what happens when technology goes too far.

The last Quantic Dreams title we’re recommending is Heavy Rain, which was released early in the studio’s history when interactive dramas were still finding their footing in the gaming landscape.

In it, players follow three protagonists as they attempt to identify and locate an elusive serial killer called The Origami Killer for their own personal reasons.

Gameplay includes an abundance of tense quick-time events as well as copious amounts of dialogue interactions to push the story forward.

While it’s not quite a horror game in the same vein as Until Dawn, there are some moments in the story where the player is made to feel uncomfortable or scared.

When discussing high-quality interactive dramas like Until Dawn, Life is Strange comes to mind for its compelling cast of characters and supernatural premise.

The story follows an 18-year-old aspiring photographer named Max Caulfield after she discovers she has the power to manipulate time.

Coming to grips with her special ability, Max tries to navigate school life while mending rocky relationships with her friends and family and solving even bigger mysteries.

Although the gameplay is a lot less involved than Until Dawn’s, fans will likely get a kick out of the way Life is Strange sets the stage of its time-traveling story.

If you seek out horror adventure games that focus on creating atmosphere while still offering plenty of jump scares and narrative twists, then Vampyr might just be the game for you.

Set during WWI London, it sees you taking on the role of a Jonathan Reid, a doctor who gets turned into a vampire and must toe the line between morality and an insatiable thirst for blood.

This leads to him having to make increasingly tough decisions that affect those around him as well as shape the game’s plot moving forward.

Bear in mind, Vampyr is a lot more action-driven than Until Dawn and places a bigger emphasis on real-time combat compared to other games previously mentioned.

Speaking of games with engrossing combat, Alien: Isolation is a challenging survival horror game that juggles stealth, action, and confined spaces in the face of danger.

In it, you’re cast as Amanda Ripley, an engineer and daughter of Alien protagonist Ellen Ripley as she sets off to investigate her mother’s disappearance after her ship’s flight recorder gets recovered.

Unfortunately, things soon take a turn for the worse, and Amanda is forced to fight for her survival aboard a remote space station teeming with corrupt androids and deadly aliens.

With resources scarce and an omnipresent threat roaming the station, players must rely on their instincts to decide when to fight and when to run and hide.

Our final recommendation to anyone who enjoyed playing Until Dawn is to either revisit or experience for the first time, the well-received Telltale interactive adventure The Walking Dead.

Based on the award-winning zombie series, it sees you playing as a convicted criminal given a second shot at life by caring for an orphaned girl during a zombie apocalypse.

Similar to Until Dawn, the game loves to put players in morally gray scenarios that blur the line between right and wrong.

These decisions each play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the story as well as the characters’ relationships and chances of survival.
