There seems to be no shortage of new horror games to keep you immersed in the spooky spirit all year round.

From upcoming remakes to sequels and spin-offs, 2024 is packed with tons of new horror game releases.

In this list, we’ll highlight the best upcoming horror games releasing for Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms.

This includes upcoming survival horror and psychological horror games coming to PC and consoles.

Since there’s no substitute for the real thing, we’d also like to highlight an official remake of the original Dead Space that’s currently in development at Motive Studios.

Considering Dead Space 3 released back in 2013, the return of EA’s iconic sci-fi horror survival shooter has been long overdue.

The remake will breathe fresh life into the 2008 original with completely remade assets, visual effects, expanded dialogue, and more.

However, at its core the story remains the same: engineer Isaac Clarke finds himself aboard a derelict mining vessel whose crew has turned into grotesque monsters.

For those unfamiliar, The Forest is an ambitious survival horror game that focuses on crafting and combat with surprisingly intelligent enemy AI.

Like many survival games, the story is fairly nonlinear but there was always enough to chew on for players interested in learning about the game’s creatures and setting.

For the sequel, developer Endnight Games looks to be expanding the universe with new characters and events revolving around yet another mysterious island.

Along with better graphics and more fluid combat, Sons of the Forest will emphasize team-driven gameplay that supports online multiplayer.

Capcom is set to continue its trend of remaking classic Resident Evil games by revisiting the fourth mainline entry in the iconic survival horror franchise.

Resident Evil 4 Remake is due out on PC and consoles in spring 2021 and will bring revitalized action to the beloved zombie game.

This includes reimagining the storyline which centers on Leon Kennedy along with implementing a host of graphical and gameplay improvements.

It’s reported that many team members from the well-received Resident Evil 2 Remake are involved with the project so here’s to hoping it’s just as good.

It’s rare we see a horror game that’s both educational and utterly terrifying as one like Autopsy Simulator.

Combining medically-sound autopsy simulation and horror-fueled gameplay, the game tasks players with dissecting humans in a realistic setting.

It was designed with help from actual forensic doctors, and judging by the trailer, their feedback was not lost on developer Woodland games.

There also appears to be an intriguing overarching narrative that will dabble with more supernatural elements that may explain why dead bodies are walking around.

Inspired by games like Alien: Isolation, Level Zero is an online multiplayer survival horror game that pits humans against terrifying creatures.

The main objective for the humans is to try and repair the space station they’re currently on while the monsters relentlessly pursue and try to kill them.

Both sides come equipped with unique skills and equipment that can come in handy for completing their mission and it’s up to players to decide when and where to use them.

If you enjoy fast-paced multiplayer games with plenty of action and competition, make sure to keep this one on your radar before it releases later this year.

With announcements that stem back over a decade, many had written off Routine as vaporware though we’re happy to report that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The game was re-revealed during Summer Game Fest 2022 and is expected to release within the next year.

Reminiscent of games like Dead Space, Routine sees you exploring a lunar base space station overrun with terrifying creatures.

It has a distinct retro 80s aesthetic that makes it stand out from similar sci-fi horror games and we look forward to learning more in the future.

Confirmed for a 2023 release window, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is an upcoming horror Metroidvania set in a dark and twisted world.

In it, you play as a self-proclaimed detective bound to a demon companion that sets out to investigate a decrepit mansion where a young couple and child disappeared.

This is done using a special power that allows Fox to explore the minds of the deceased and witness their memories firsthand.

The game’s story looks to cover a gambit of Lovecraftian themes including secret organizations, forbidden rituals, and Eldritch horrors.

Next up, Aliens: Dark Descent is a new take on the iconic horror franchise that sees players combating a new Xenomorph outbreak on Moon Lethe.

Blending RTS combat with squad-based management, the game centers on a group of rogue operatives fighting for their lives.

Players will be able to customize their team and pick from different classes to level up while unlocking new abilities, weapons, perks, and armor.

As things progress, missions will become increasingly harrowing and require tough decisions to be made and careful planning to ensure the entire squad’s survival.

Fans of Bloober Team’s distinct brand of psychological horror can look forward to picking up an expanded remake of the first two Layer of Fear games with Layers of Fears.

The most notable additions are new story and gameplay content that builds upon Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2.

Additionally, since the game was created using Unreal Engine 5, it will offer added support for ray-tracing, HDR, 4K resolution, and more.

Definitely something to keep an eye out for if you enjoy first-person horror games and never got around to playing the originals.

Fort Solis is another upcoming sci-fi game set in space that chronicles the physical and emotional toll that comes with prolonged isolation.

Players are cast as Engineer Jack Leary as he responds to a routine alarm on the far side of Mars where things quickly take a turn for the worst.

Much of the plot is shrouded in mystery but we do know Fort Solis will have a star-studded cast comprised of Troy Baker, Roger Clark, and Julia Brown.

For now, the game looks to combine atmospheric environments with tense scenarios that will leave players feeling claustrophobic at times.

Coming from the twisted mind of Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama, Slitterhead is an upcoming horror game in development by Bokeh Game Studio.

The game is set in an original setting inspired by 1980s Hong Kong and sees players fleeing from nightmarish creatures that appear to mimic the look of humans.

This is briefly shown off in the reveal trailer where we see a beautiful woman transform into a disgusting monster in a matter of seconds.

Again, not many details to go off of as of yet but expect that to change as development progresses.

ILL is another upcoming body horror game that’s sure to have players reeling from witnessing grotesque body transformations unfold.

The gameplay trailer covers everything from a meeting among face-splitting humanoids to crab-like creatures bursting out of human bodies.

The overall vibe is very reminiscent of movies like John Carpenter’s The Thing and is sure to shake up the horror genre.

Considering ILL has been in development for several years, we look forward to seeing how much has evolved when the game drops in the near future.

Now that Remedy has fully acquired the rights to Alan Wake from Microsoft, we can anticipate a follow-up to one of the studio’s most defining titles.

Officially announced during The Game Awards 2021, Alan Wake 2 will run on Remedy’s proprietary Northlight Engine and serve as a survival horror experience.

It’s been confirmed that players will not need to have played the previous games in order to under the plot and gameplay will retain a third-person POV.

On the casting side of things, Alan Wake 2 will see the return of Ilkka Villi and Matthew Porretta as the appearance and voice of Alan, respectively.

Drawing inspiration from classic survival horror titles, Silent Night positions itself as a ghost-hunting gothic adventure set in an isolated church on Christmas Eve.

You play as a man named Nigel Danvers who finds himself trapped in a time loop that puts him face-to-face with ghosts from throughout history.

Using various spirit-tracking gadgets, Nigel will be forced to make the tough decision of which spirit to exorcise from the church, condemning the rest for all eternity.

So far, it looks to be offering heavy amounts of atmosphere and potentially high replayability with multiple endings depending on which ghost you choose to free.

What could be more terrifying than finding yourself stranded on a remote island surrounded by bloodthirsty dinosaurs?

In Deathground, up to three players band together to survive while on a mission to retrieve valuable treasure guarded by dinosaurs with dynamic and reactive behaviors.

Throughout the game, enemies will adjust their actions and make different decisions based on where players’ location and progress.

Players can choose to work together or take on the world solo as they complete objectives and harness each character class’s distinct traits, skills, and tools.

Joining the droves of Lovecraftian-inspired games is Dead Static Drive, a horror survival adventure title from indie developer/publisher Reuben Games.

In it, players take on the role of a survivor traveling from place to place as the world falls mercy to otherworldly invaders.

To stay alive, they’ll have to sneak, scavenge, fight, befriend, and steal from other people while avoiding massive tendrils and other horrors roaming the world.

It’s an interesting blend of Lovecraft, Grand Theft Auto, and choose-you-own adventure that has our interest piqued.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was announced during the Game Awards 2019 following the reveal of the Xbox Series X’s name and design.

The sequel sees Ninja Theory back at the helm for a much more thematically dark and atmospheric game, which is saying a lot for anyone who played the original.

The announcement trailer doesn’t give away too much besides confirming the game will be coming to both Series X and PC.

There’s an emphasis on rituals being performed, traveling across stunning landscapes, and an encounter with a massive creature.

Cosmic horror fans will have their hands full next year when Quantum Error releases for both PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

Developed by Teamkill Media, the first-person shooter sees you playing as Capt. Jacob Thomas, a fireman tasked with entering a research facility that’s been set ablaze.

You and your crew must try to save as many lives as possible while investigating the mysterious cause of the fire.

We’re willing to take a shot in the dark and suggest things may not be as black and white as they seem and there’s probably something more sinister at play.

When the original System Shock was released in 1994, critics praised the game’s relatively realistic physics and the scale of its 3D environments.

Today, the series is remembered for elevating the first-person genre even though its success was short-lived.

Fortunately, developer Night Dive Studios is looking to bring the original back to life with a backer-funded remake currently in the works.

The scrappy developer is taking their time with the project to best recreate the look and vibe of the original, going as far as to consult former Looking Glass Studios staff.

Instead of putting out a third installment that mirrors the single-player design of the first two games, The Outlast Trials is a multiplayer-focused affair.

Details are far and few between at the moment, but what we do know is the game will take place during the Cold War era.

In it, you and your friends are involuntarily recruited to become test guinea pigs for mind-control experiments at the hands of a shady corporation.

Players will have to work together to make it out alive while their morals, endurance, and sanity are put through the wringer.

Duality Games’ upcoming survival horror title Unholy managed to catch our eye due to its thoroughly exciting premise.

In it, you play as Saidah, one of the last humans left alive in a world where monstrous creatures outrank humans.

One day, your child gets abducted by these creatures, prompting you to search for clues about where she was taken.

Primarily a stealth game, Unholy tasks you with rescuing your daughter while making sure not to draw too much attention from the deadly monsters who roam the streets.

Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare is an upcoming horror point-and-click adventure game penned by Italian film director and screenwriter Ruggero Deodato.

Deodato is known for making violent and gory horror films with strong elements of realism, with his most notable film being Cannibal Holocaust.

In it, players are tasked with reconstructing the events of an expedition gone awry in the mysterious jungles of Borneo in Southeast Asia.

While the game is still very early in development, the announcement trailer shows some clear connections between Borneo and Deodato’s previous works.
